Eugeen Van Mieghem

Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930) is an Antwerp realist artist. He grows up in his parents’ café, right across the entrance of the Red Star Line sheds in the Montevideostraat.

Eugeen Van Mieghem makes various sketches and pastel art of the many emigrants passing by. He sketches them individually or in groups. With a sharp eye for detail, Van Mieghem sketches the traditional clothing and postures of the emigrants. His art strikingly represents the emigrants’ misery and woe.

Van Mieghem is not the only realist artist who depicts the emigrants in his works. Louis Van Engelen, Victor Hageman, Constantin Meunier, Edgard Farasijn and Eugène Laermans also use the emigration theme in their works.
